The competition brief

The House of the Future competition, organized by Buildner in partnership with the Dubai Government, challenged designers to create a revolutionary, new-age housing template for Emirati citizens in Dubai. The task was to design a residence for a family of four to six on a 450m2 plot, with a strict construction budget of 1 million AED and a recommended building height of G+1 or G+2. Architecturally, the project must had navigate a "binary" context: honoring Dubai’s rich cultural heritage and Islamic values, such as the vital need for privacy (majlis) and specific culinary traditions, while embracing a polished, high-tech future through sustainable, locally sourced materials and power-efficient systems. The client, represented by the Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment, intended to utilize the winning designs as part of its official housing options, providing innovative, affordable, and expandable "dream homes" that feel both "cozy" and "welcoming" to the local population.
